Accelerating the adoption of proven innovation across the water sector

Ofwat has recently announced a bold new funding route from the Ofwat Innovation Fund — the Water Innovation Implementation Programme — designed to help the UK water sector move from innovation demonstration to full scale-adoption.

Over the next five years, the organisation is making up to £40 million available to accelerate the deployment of proven solutions. The Programme includes two complementary streams:

  • Early Adopter & Fast Follower Stream — providing match-funding to de-risk implementation of innovative solutions that have already been tested and proven during previous Ofwat Innovation Fund projects.
  • Implementation Enablers Stream — addressing cross-cutting adoption barriers that slow or block innovation across the sector.

The Programme will sit alongside Ofwat’s ongoing Water Breakthrough and Water Discovery challenges, and new competitions Water Efficiency Lab, Water Innovation Missions and Water Innovation Cross-Sector Challenge, as part of Ofwat’s expanded £400 million innovation package for 2025–2030. Together, these routes will take innovations from discovery and demonstration through to implementation at scale — ensuring benefits are realised faster and more widely across England and Wales.

More detail on each stream can be found on the Ofwat website

💧 Meet Ofwat at World Water-Tech London on February 24-25, 2026.
